Euro-Funding Supports Port of Holyhead Development
01 Aug 2002
Stena Line Ports Ltd will undertake a £12.3 million investment to build a new berth and associated infrastructure at the Port of Holyhead with the support of Objective 1 funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
The development will include a new common user ro-ro ferry berth to be named Terminal 5 and located to the east of Salt Island at Holyhead Port.
Dredging of an approach channel to the new berth to a depth of 8m will see the removal of some 210,000m 3of dredged material, allowing deeper draught vessels to use the new facility.
Six new berthing dolphins, interconnecting walkways and associated fendering systems will allow large ferries to berth in high winds. The reliability of ferries using the berth will be a prime objective during the design process. The construction of a new double deck loading linkspan will facilitate two separate roadways onto ferries, allowing rapid loading and discharge of car decks. The linkspan will be designed to accommodate every type of vehicle load.
Reclamation to facilitate the construction and placement of the linkspan will be require some 100,000m 3of fill and rock armour protection.
