AIS Training Course to Hit the Road

Kongsberg Simrad Ltd has developed a one day course to give participants a basic insight into the mandatory requirements for Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), as well as its principles, application and benefits.

In the rush for compliance with mandatory systems such as AIS, customers can miss vital information about actual system usage and how it can benefit their vessels.
In the rush for compliance with mandatory systems such as AIS, customers can miss vital information about actual system usage and how it can benefit their vessels.

Derek Giles, Training Co-ordinator for the Aberdeen based company, said, "We realised from talking to customers that there was an immediate requirement for training in AIS.

As a manufacturer, we felt that at present we have both the knowledge and understanding of the system to produce a meaningful course that will give a wide range of marine personnel a good insight into AIS."

The courses will be run at the company's Aberdeen premises and will also be available at customer premises if suitable facilities are available. There will also be an AIS course roadshow coming to major port and harbour facilities over the next few months. Derek Giles explained, "We have found that for one day courses there is sometimes a reluctance on the part of customers to travel to Aberdeen, so the easiest answer is to go to them. We hope that these courses will raise awareness of the added benefits of AIS and assuage some of the fears."
