Golden Helmet Awarded to Port Accident Survivor
01 Aug 2002
In a recent accident at a crane berth in the Port of Ipswich, operations foreman Ivan Ransby was knocked unconscious when loose dunnage slipped from between packs of timber being unloaded onto the quay. The incident could have had fatal consequences had Ransby not been wearing a Centurion 1125 safety helmet which cushioned the blow to the right side of his head.
To commemorate the favourable outcome of the event, helmet manufacturers Centurion Safety Products of nearby Thetford in Norfolk have presented Ransby and his employer Associated British Ports with an exclusive Golden Helmet award.
The award is only given out for major health and safety incidents where the company's head protection equipment has proved the deciding factor in a worker's survival. Like other incidents where this award has been given, the accident was characterised by the fact that it happened despite health and safety standards being rigourously adhered to.
ABP safety officer Andy Bowley agreed that but for the safety helmet, Ransley might not be alive, "I now use the helmet as a training aid on Induction Training for new employees, he said. "It demonstrates the need to wear a safety helmet and the effectiveness of protection gained by this item of personal protective equipment."
In addition to meeting the mandatory requirements of European Standrad EN397, the design features on the Centurion 1125 safety helmet ensure that it offers the added protection of excellent lateral rigidity, providing a high level of side impact protection, which was shown to be crucial in this case.
