Halmatic Steels the Show with seawork Signing

Halmatic's march into the steelbuilt workboat sector made further progress at seawork2002, where the Portchester yard signed a contract to build a 15m general purpose workboat for Northern Ireland based D. Ferran and Sons.

Ferran, which provides the only round the clock service operating and maintaining pilot launches and other craft for the Belfast Port Authority, will use the newbuild for general harbour duties in the Belfast Lough area.

The Belfast vessel will have a bollard pull in excess of ten tonnes and will be powered by twin fully electronic Volvo D12 engines rated 550 hp at 1,900 rpm, the first commercial application of these units by a UK boatbuilder.

The craft will be protected by the new generation of tin-free antifouling from Jotun Paint Systems.

The vessel is scheduled for completion early next year.

Halmatic's Ian Strugnell commented, "We are now entering an intensive design phase with our suppliers, including Centraalstaal from The Netherlands who are cutting and supplying the steel in kit form."
