  • Completion of Seven-year Irish Deep-water Survey

    The Geological Survey of Ireland in Dublin reports completion of the deep-water section of its seven-year Euro 32m National Seabed Survey project aimed at mapping an offshore area ten times larger than Ireland itself. 

  • French Order for Seismic Integrated Positioning System

    French seismic survey company CGG has acquired three SIPS 2 seismic integrated positioning systems from Yateley-based Sonardyne International for real-time positioning of streamers in support of high-resolution 3D surveys aboard its vessels Mistral, Fohn and Harmattan. 

  • New Low-cost Sidescan Sonar European Demos

    Destined for demonstrations throughout Europe early in the new year is a new compact low-cost portable sidescan sonar from Marine Sonic Technology (MSTL) of Virginia, the Centurion Sea Scan. Designed for search and recovery operations, it can be operational within minutes and needs only a 12V DC power source.

  • Three-year Contract Will Monitor Stability of Dubai Coastline

    The EmuDome Joint Venture - a joint venture is between Emu Ltd in the UK and Dome International, headquartered in Abu Dhabi - has been awarded a three-year contract to monitor the stability of the entire coastline of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. 

  • Divers Undertake Repairs on Historic Weir on the River Avon

    Techniques more usually used on the ocean floor are currently being applied by British Waterways' contractor Seastructures Ltd to repair an historic weir on the River Avon at Keynsham near Bristol, which forms part of the Kennet and Avon Canal. 

  • Deep Water Jetty for New Orkney Ferry Service

    A new deep water jetty for the ro-ro ferries - the Hjaltland and Hrossey - has achieved 'minimum berthing status' at Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, and is on course for completion next year, at which time it will also begin to be used by the large number of cruise ships that visit the Orkney islands nowadays, as well as cargo vessels calling at Kirkwall. 

  • Civic Work at Muck and Rum

    The Highland Council in Scotland in the UK is taking immediate steps to ensure that work is completed as quickly as possible on new berthing facilities at the Small Isles of Muck and Rum. 

  • Compensation Land Earmarked for Bathside Bay Development

    As part of its plans to develop a modern container terminal at Bathside Bay, Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owner of Harwich International Port, is proposing to create compensatory intertidal mudflat through alterations to the positions of sea walls.

    South Tyneside College has become the first institution to receive MCA approval for VTS Supervisor Advancement Training. The breakthrough comes less than two years after the College was first to receive accreditation for the provision of basic training in VTS.

    AIMS MIII, the universal automatic identification system (UAIS) from Marine Data Systems (MDS) of South Africa has recently completed a successful trial on the Solent conducted by Trinity House in collaboration with ABP Southampton, Red Funnel Ferries, Condor Marine and Tideland Signal, which distributes the system worldwide.

    A new attitude and heading reference system combining gyrocompass and motion sensor in one box has been launched by the recently re-branded VT TSS Ltd of Whitney UK.

    The British Army Powerboat Team, supported by radio distributor Icom UK Ltd, circumnavigated Britain this summer in only ten days with 13 young soldiers crewing two 6.5m Humber Ocean Pro RIBs. Some of the team had never set foot in a RIB before training began for the 2,397 mile voyage.

    Plymouth UK based Seastructures Limited has installed a meteorological mast at Kentish Flats, in the Thames Estuary some 11 km off Whitstable, Kent. The mast will be used to collect wind data for a year before the likely go-ahead for an offshore windfarm at the Kentish Flats site.

    Plymouth UK based Howard Marine has recently undertaken a large site investigation on the River Thames. Working on behalf of Norwest Holst, Howard Marine conducted the work close to the Tilbury Power Station and adjacent to the existing pier, which is to be extended to enable larger vessels to berth with coal for the power station.

    Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Japan has called upon European dredging expertise to help it build the largest dredger ever produced in that country, a 10,000m 3capacity trailing suction hopper dredger for the Suez Canal Authority. The vessel will be used to maintain dredged depths in entrance channels to the Suez Canal.
