New Low-cost Sidescan Sonar European Demos

Destined for demonstrations throughout Europe early in the new year is a new compact low-cost portable sidescan sonar from Marine Sonic Technology (MSTL) of Virginia, the Centurion Sea Scan. Designed for search and recovery operations, it can be operational within minutes and needs only a 12V DC power source.
Featuring a 12lb computer with a 10.4 inch colour flatscreen display, a 300MHz processor and 20GB hard drive, the system incorporates self-contained JRC DGPS facilities as well as USB and Ethernet port connections and interfaces for standard keyboards and pointing devices.
It is also fully compatible with other MSTL towfish and cables and is available with a single frequency towfish in addition to 100m and 30m tow cables.
According to Karl Schmidt of Gabe GmbH in Austria, whose distributorship also extends to Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland, a splash-proof system will retail for around the equivalent of $40,750 and a desktop version for $28,925. Principal agents for prospective UK and Irish customers are Oceanscan of Aberdeen.
