Isn't It Good, Norwegians Would (Use It If They Could)

The success accruing after only three years for the Trinity House Lighthouse Estate Business Plan in the UK recently attracted a visiting party of 17 national and local government officials from Norway who would like to implement similar enlightened strategies in their own country.

The main objectives of the Trinity House Lighthouse Estate Business Plan are threefold.

The first aim is to conserve lighthouses as historic structures of national or local importance.

The second is to encourage public access to lighthouses for recreational and educational visits.

The third is to develop new and innovative revenue streams to reduce the burden on shipowners who currently fund lighthouse services through light duties levied on commercial shipping calling at ports in the UK and Ireland.

As a result of the Plan, formulated in 1999, Trinity House currently licenses 11 lighthouse visitor attractions and has launched a related initiative in association with national operator Rural Retreats to offer 34 former Lighthouse Keepers' cottages as high quality holiday accommodation.

Coming to see these conservation and management initiatives first hand, the Norwegian delegation visited lighthouses at Lizard in Cornwall, Start Point in South Devon, and Portland Bill in Dorset. They then attended a seminar at Trinity House in London with contributions from a series of speakers with a span of experience covering all aspects of lighthouse visitor management, from conservation planning to tourism development.

Commenting on the visit by the Norwegians, David Brewer, Trinity House Director of Administration said, 'Our lighthouses continue to contribute towards the safety of shipping.

In addition, many of them are being recognised increasingly as national heritage assets. Our aim is to provide for their long-term future and in doing so, create unique opportunities for access and education. We are delighted that our plans are receiving international recognition and we look forward to sharing our experiences.'
