One-Box Gyrocompass and Motion Sensor from TSS

A new attitude and heading reference system combining gyrocompass and motion sensor in one box has been launched by the recently re-branded VT TSS Ltd of Whitney UK.

The Meridian Attitude and Heading Reference System (MAHRS) closely integrates the Meridian gyrocompass from the S G Brown Division of VT TSS with the company's own DMS motion sensor. The two technologies are integrated with a new algorithm that introduces Deck Plane Correction that enables the new MAHRS to offer heading accuracy of less than 0.1º with a heave, roll and pitch accuracy of less than 0.03º.

MAHRS has been developed as a master heading reference instrument employing the characteristics of a dynamically tuned gyro (DTG) which uses the effects of gravity and the Earth's rotation to produce a true north reference more precisely than even the latest fibre-optic designs. The exceptionally stable heading provided by MAHRS, even during the most extreme sea conditions and vessel movements, can be maintained for turn rates in excess of 200º per second, making the system ideal for use on fast survey craft and in inshore environments.

The MAHRS unit includes an upgraded version of the gyro software that will apply to all Meridian gyrocompases, further improving the temperature compensation characteristics.

Unlike many FOG-based devices, the Meridian unit continues to operate at temperature extremes to provide reliable and repeatable accuracy. MAHRS can be provided for vessels of any size.

Potential applications include its use with multi and single beam echosounders, acoustic and dynamic positioning, and for monitoring vessels and platforms.

The Vosper Thornycroft Group, which includes TSS and S.G. Brown, has recently been renamed VT Group Plc to reflect a broadened base of business activities in which over 50% of turnover and profit is now derived from operations unrelated to manufacturing.
