'Tong Tan' Launch Marks IHC's Chinese Century
01 Dec 2002
The 3,500m 3capacity Tong Tan , which will be commissioned in China early next year, is the most recent expression of a relationship between the two companies which dates back 100 years. In 1901 and 1902, founder members of IHC sold two bucket dredgers to the Hai-Ho Conservancy Board, the forerunner of today's TDC.
Tong Tan is the 140th dredger IHC has produced for Chinese clients.
TDC specialises in maintenance dredging of the approaches, fairways and basins around Tianjin but its scope of activities has widened in recent years to include work around the coast, estuaries and ports of China and elsewhere in Asia.
The 90m long, multi-functional Tong Tan is designed to undertake a broad range of maintenance and capital dredging works.
Its size and capacity are matched to the physical circumstances of China, with features such as the single 900 mm diameter suction pipe, advanced hull shape and self-emptying system providing solutions at many Chinese dredging locations where shallow water obstructs the passage of larger dredgers.
The environmentally friendly, twin screw vessel is capable of dredging to depths of 28m and has a maximum loading capacity of 5,300 tonnes at a draught of only 6.5m.
The aft mounted dredge pump is directly driven by a dedicated diesel engine and can be connected in tandem with the starboard propulsion diesel through a twin input/single output gearbox to boost power during discharge. This arrangement enables the vessel to discharge to shore either by rainbowing or through a bow connection to a floating pipeline. Two rows of bottom doors allow direct dumping to sea.
The Tong Tan was built to Bureau Veritas I 3/3 E Hopper Dredger (unrestricted navigation) AUT-MS, and under the supervision of China Classification Society of the People's Republic of China.
