Cranes Pack Power as Holyhead Gets Tough
01 Feb 2002
Effer cranes are to be fitted to two tugs belonging to Holyhead Towing, one a newbuilding currently under construction at the Hepworth Shipyard on Humberside, the other a refit of an existing boat to follow at the same shipyard.
Effer 65 cranes are to be fitted to both vessels, equipping multi-tasking workboats which will extend Holyhead Towing's operational capabilities. The extra deck equipment on the two vessels will enable them to take on a larger range of duties.
The deck equipment of the two tugs will include a stern roller on one vessel and a fore roller on the other, both able to handle 50 tonne loads, along with a 30 tonne 'A' frame for ploughing and other seabed tasks as well as a 30 tonne hydraulic anchor handling and towing winch.
However, Holyhead Towing describes the versatile, heavy duty 65 tonne/metre long-reach Effer cranes as the most significant value added equipment.
The cranes are to be supplied and fitted by European Crane Services, who have supplied Holyhead with other marine cranes.
The specification for the vessel to be refitted, the Llanwyn Island, has been derived from Holyhead Towing's wide working knowledge, which has also been incorporated into the design of the new vessel. The 22.5m loa newbuilding will be powered by two Cummins KTA19 M3 engines, each delivering 640bhp at 1,800rpm through 6:1 reduction gearboxes.
Mark Meade, managing director of Holyhead Towing, said, 'The addition of these two vessels to our substantial existing fleet will extend our capabilities in towing, servicing and supply tasks, whether in restricted coastal waters or in open seas and under tough working conditions. Their new deck equipment, particularly the winches and the Effer cranes, will make these two vessels amongst the toughest and most power-packed workboats in European waters'.
