Multidisciplinary Site Investigation Close to Shipping Lanes

A multidisciplinary investigation has been completed by Foundation and Exploration Services Ltd (FES) at Harwich UK, where both land and marine drilling were required.

Mouchel, consultant to Harwich International Port Ltd, wanted information on the seabed and sub-surface conditions for an onshore HSS terminal plus a berth and offshore moorings about 100m offshore from the existing quay.

FES completed 18 onshore boreholes using a cable percussion rig to varying depths between 5m and 32m. Offshore, five boreholes were sunk to depths of 40m into the Lower London Tertiary and chalk, with 13 pressure meter tests in four of the holes at specified depths from 6m to 40m. FES employed cable percussion and rotary core drilling techniques from the jack-up platform Mytilus in water depths of up to 10m.

The work, carried out adjacent to a busy shipping lane, was completed to a strict timescale.
