CO2 Monitor Designed to Save Lives
01 Feb 2002
The potentially lethal consequences of a leak from CO2 bottle stores has been identified by ship owners and regulatory bodies as a major cause for concern. As well as CO2 bottle stores, a new danger has been identified with dry ice systems used in theatrical productions on board cruise ships.
The new CO2 Alarm from Martek Marine Ltd is a carbon dioxide monitoring system for the protection of personnel and passengers. It offers reliable infrared monitoring in CO 2storage areas and provides alarm status at the entry point to the space. The infrared CO2 sensor is set to provide an alarm at the occupational exposure limits laid down by the relevant health and safety authority.
Upon detection of a concentration of CO 2at the pre-alarm threshold (usually 0.5% CO 2), a non-latching audio visual alarm will activate to warn of the hazard. When the main alarm is reached (usually 1.5% CO 2), a latching alarm is activated to further warn of the hazard.
This alarm can only be reset when the CO 2concentration drops below the alarm concentration.
The system alarms can be used to shut down machinery to ensure the safety of personnel and passengers via the connection of slave relays.
Optional analogue relay outputs are available to interface with a vessel's central control system.
