New Crowley Escort Tug Due in May

The first of a new design of escort tractor tug will be delivered to Seattle based Crowley Maritime within the next few months by the local Marco Shipyard. Known as the Crowley Protector II class, the first tug built to this new design is due for completion at Marco's Seattle shipyard in May of this year. The new tug will be used to escort and assist oil tankers in Puget Sound, WA USA and carry the following ABS classification: +A1 Towing service, +AMS, +A1 firefighting vessel Class 1.

Guido Perla and Associates of Seattle have been responsible for the design of the new 'skeg-first tractor tug, working in close cooperation with propulsion system manufacturers Voith Schiffstechnik, of Heidenheim, Germany. The hull is based on a highly successful escort tractor design from Bugser og Bjergning A/S, of Norway, a company with considerable experience of 'skeg-first' tractor design, construction and operation.

An option to build a second vessel is in place with Marco and propulsion manufacturer Voith Schiffstechnik.

The new Crowley tug will be 39.5m long, with a moulded beam of 13.9m and depth of 7.4m. Two Caterpillar 3608 DITA engines, will provide a total power of 5.412kW to drive a pair of Voith Schneider 32GII/250 cycloidal propellers.

Auxiliary power will be supplied by two generating sets driven by Caterpillar 3306 diesels. The tug will have a static bollard pull of 68 tons, a free running speed of 15 knots, and be capable of indirect steering forces in excess of 154 tons at 12 knots. Deck equipment will feature a Markey Dess-52 single-drum electric towing winch with a line pull of 222 tons (on the first layer).
