National Park Blow to Dibden Bay Plans

Associated British Ports' plans for a new container terminal at Dibden Bay have been dealt a blow after a key Government agency decided that the site should be included in the newly designated New Forest National Park.

The proposed Dibden Bay site, left, is the largest surviving link of the New Forest to waterside.

The Countryside Agency has revealed that it plans to hand down an order designating the New Forest as Britain's ninth National Park, and the first new one for 40 years. The boundaries of the new national park will include Dibden Bay area. The Countryside Agency says the 500-acre site should be preserved for 'its landscape quality and wild but tranquil aspect' and 'because it is the largest surviving link for the Forest to the waterside'.

The agency says it has a Government mandate to protect areas such as Dibden, and acknowledges the fact that its decision may well present difficulties for the planning application.
