Infra-red Monitoring for Newbuilds
01 Jan 2002
Swan Hunter at Tyneside UK, the lead contractor for new amphibious assault ships being built for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, has awarded the contract for Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) to Newcastle based Sir Joseph Isherwood Limited.
Isherwoods will be providing a comprehensive package of computerised systems, technical manuals and logistic support analysis services that will identify critical maintenance needs, evaluate and manage the ships' spare parts needs and provide maintenance and supply management systems. It will also include a software package to support the use of sophisticated portable equipment for monitoring the condition of mechanical and electrical services, including the use of infrared thermography.
The four new ships, known as Alternative Landing Ship Logistic (ALSL) vessels, are being built to a Dutch design under a contract worth $430m.
Swan Hunter is constructing two at its Wallsend yard which are scheduled to enter service in January 2004 and January 2005.
The other two ships are to be built by BAE Systems Marine at its Govan yard and will be entering service in April 2004 and February 2005. The new ALSL vessels will replace the aging Sir Belvedere class which participated in the Falklands war and the hostage rescue in Sierra Leone.
