Monitoring & Control

Measuring Maritime Methane

Methane has been recognised as one of the most important gases in our environment, touching either directly or indirectly upon all areas of life. Methane monitoring is undertaken in a number of maritime areas, including oceanographic research and the offshore oil, gas, and methane hydrate extraction markets.

A new sensor from Hampshire UK based RS Aqua Ltd measures methane concentrations in water. The METS sensor was originally developed at Germany's GKSS Research Centre and has already found applications in the USA, Japan, Brazil, France and Norway.

METS is a compact, lightweight and adaptable sensor.

It measures 200mm in length, weighs just 1.5kg in air and can currently be supplied for use at the water surface and to depths through to 3,500m.

The standard measuring range is 50nmol/1-10umol/l, but other ranges are available on request.

Data outputs are available as RS485, RS232, 0-5V and 4-20mA signals.
