The verdict also imposes environmental conditions for the project relating to the effects of siltation during dredging, the protection of habitat and working hours limitations.

The applicants, the Swedish National Maritime Administration, the City of Goteborg and the Port of Goteborg, now have permission to dredge, drill and blast in order to straighten and widen the Torshamn fairway to a depth of 20.5m to the crude oil terminal and 15m to the container terminal.

The Botto fairway and harbour areas will be deepened to depths of between 14.7 and 15.8m, and 38 pile beacons will be erected to line the fairway. The enhancements are in a project to be run jointly by the Swedish National Maritime Administration and the Port of Goteborg. It will increase the safety of vessel movements and facilitate navigation in the area. The first phase is due for completion in 2004.
