£6m for Marine Induction Motor
01 Jan 2002
Following an initial joint £20m contract award by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the French Government for the design, build and operation of an Electric Ship Technology Demonstrator (ESTD) facility, Alstom has been awarded a further £6m contract.
The ESTD test facility will undergo progressive expansion to provide a range of electrical supplies and loads to enable de-risking of future integrated electrical propulsion projects.
However, the latest contract is for the supply and commissioning of a 20MW, 180rpm Advanced Induction Motor for marine propulsion plus a 20MW PWM converter and harmonic filters.
Key features of the design of the 20MW induction motor, specifically to meet naval requirements, will be its extremely low noise and vibration signature and impressive power density. It is anticipated that this latest design of Alstom 20MW induction motor will be considered for the essential propulsion unit in the new Type 45 destroyers to be built for the British Royal Navy.
