Deutz Power for New Coastal Freighter

Six cylinder engines from the ubiquitous Deutz 628 series have been chosen as the main drive for a new type of ship, the Crescent Rhine river carrier, a coastal freighter which was built at the Bodewes Scheepswerf Volharding Foxhol BV in Waterhuizen, Germany.

This new vessel type is designed to transport containers and other freight, with special strengthening to accommodate heavy loads. The 88m long coastal freighter is one of a series of four being built, all of which will be powered by Deutz 628 series engines. The 628 series meets IMO Marpol 73/78 Annex VI regulations and is certified by German Lloyd and other companies.

Over 3,000 engines of this series have been supplied for a variety of vessels worldwide.

Recent tug installations include 1,285kW versions driving Schottel propulsion in the sister ship harbour tugs Marte, Neptuno and Pollux while eight cylinder, 1,500kW versions have gone into a series of six harbour tugs built by Spanish yard Astilleros Armon.
