ISO 9001-2000 for ASRY Yard
01 Jan 2002
Bahrain's ASRY Yard crowned a successful final quarter of 2001 by becoming the first shipyard in the world to be awarded the prestigious ISO 9001-2000 Certificate from the Norwegian society Det Norsk Veritas. The Certificate is in recognition of the Quality Management System in place at the Yard.
The quarter also saw ASRY being awarded the International Shiprepair News award for excellence and innovation for work completed during 2001 on the Abouzar 1200 heavy lift crane ship. ASRY converted the Abouzar 1200 into a deepwater pipe-lay barge capable of laying pipe in up to 100m water depth using the S-lay method.
New pipe handling equipment was installed enabling Abouzar 1200 to handle pipe of diameters from 8" to 60" fully coated. A 1200 SHT main crane was installed along with an eight anchor mooring system with eight mooring winches fitted with 1,500m length of 2.5" wire and widened by 3m on both sides along the full 40m overall length of the vessel. DNV carried out Class inspection during the contract and the vessel has been deployed on Phase 1 of the 120km Iran South Pass development.
ASRY has remained exceptionally busy in the wake of the September 11 attacks by offering to cover the increased war risk insurance premium for shipowners who continue to use the Yard.
Some 24 vessels were docked during the final quarter of 2001, including the 'HAM 309' dredger owned by HAM Dredging.
