A&P Revives Cammell Laird Shiprepair Yard in Birkenhead
01 Jul 2002
The former Cammell Laird shiprepair yard at Birkenhead UK is due to re-open next month under the auspices of the A&P Group, which is looking to re-establish a dedicated workforce from amongst the 1,500 who lost their jobs when the yard closed last year.
The Birkenhead facility will become the largest facility within the A&P Group, with three drydocks and a wet basin. These will require dredging to remove siltation which has built up during the period of closure. A&P intends to concentrate initially on drydocking and shiprepair work, targeting repair work available from local shortsea services to Ireland.
Meanwhile, A&P Falmouth has completed works on RFA Brambleleaf, which drydocked there in May for a repair and refit programme which included full hull coating preparation and painting, rudder repairs, propeller blade replacement, remedial work on anchors and cables, a full overhaul of the ship's salt water system and also a major repair/remedial work programme to the cargo and ballast systems.
Further work was carried out after the vessel undocked, involving refurbishment of crew living quarters, the freshwater system, galley and food storage areas and the installation of new sewage treatment plant.
For sea trials which started recently, the yard carried out survey work on the starboard main engine and diesel alternator, stripped down and rebuilt the gearbox couplings and clutches, overhauled numerous pumps, the vessel's navigation system and the classification surveyor's loadline requirements.
