New Drydock Enroute to Ciramar

A new German-built floating drydock is expected to arrive this month at the Santo Domingo repair yard of Ciramar S.A.

The 7,500 tonne lift capacity structure was built by GHH and measures 150 by 26m (inside) and with a 7m draught above keelblocks. The dock will have its own crane capacity of two by 6 tonnes.

ITC of the Netherlands has deployed its 102 tonne bollard pull tug Suhali to tow the dock from the Volkswerft Stralsund GmbH yard in Germany to Las Calderas, near Santo Domingo, where it is expected to become operational by October.

The dock has been purchased together with a Voith Schneider propelled multipurpose workboat/ tug which, in combination with the dock, will allow Ciramar to offer a broader range of services.

Ciramar has also acquired a quay extension unit, a supporting lift unit and other equipment from Volkswerft Stralsund GmbH.

The purchases represent a major expansion for Ciramar, which presently owns a 70m floating drydock and a 250 tonne shiplift.

The yard expects to extend its workforce to up to 500 people as it also increases its newbuild contracts, currently calling for six vessels to be constructed in co-operation with European partners.
