Pilot Boat Refit at Halmatic
01 Jul 2002
An extensive refit and refurbishment is underway at Halmatic's Portchester UK shipyard which will provide the Shetland Islands with a totally revamped pilot boat.
The 1982-built North Cape 65 pilot boat Sullum Shoormal is one of three owned and operated by Shetland Islands Council and used for pilot transfers into the islands.
The FRP hulled craft will be rebuilt over the next few months with a return to service scheduled for later this year. Under the contract, which calls for a major overhaul and refit, the boat will be totally gutted and two new Caterpillar 3412C-TA turbocharged marine diesels rated 764hp at 2,100rpm will be fitted and matched to ZF 1900A gearboxes.
Although the hull, deck and wheelhouse will remain intact, major structural repairs, alterations and strengthening will be undertaken. The contract, worth several hundred thousands of pounds, will also include the installation of new operating systems and controls. Integrating the systems and revamping the wheelhouse has required considerable design input from Halmatic and demonstrates their capability to work on vessels from outside their own range.
