Rapid Repair Saves Fisherman's Season
01 Jul 2002
American fisherman Joe Hamm suffered his worst nightmare last month when the engine on his 73ft trawler Chellissa blew up at the very start of the west coast hake season. Towed back to port, he went to see the supplier of an engine less than three years old only to be rebuffed.
Hamm turned to Curry Marine, a well known fisherman's friend in the Pacific Northwest, which immediately set about installing a Cummins KTA38 MO rated 850hp at 1,800rpm and matched to the Twin Disc TD5202 gears from the blown engine installation. Chellissa had been powered by Cummins for 20 years before the engine which failed so Hamm was happy to return to the brand.
Curry Marine was on schedule to have Chellissa repaired and back in the hake grounds early this month for the remainder of the season before heading north to Alaska to fish for pollock and cod. Curry Marine is also supplying a Cummins KTA38 main engine for a crabbing boat under construction at the Fred Wahl shipyard in Oregon.
