The 17th International Tug and Salvage Convention - ITS 2002 started in brisk fashion in the Spanish city and port of Bilbao on 13 May, with close to 400 delegates and exhibitors arriving from every corner of the world's towage and salvage industries Held at the ultra-modern Euskalduna Conference Centre, the event ran for four days and included an exhibition with 60 stands representing towage companies, shipbuilders, naval architects and equipment manufacturers. This bi-annual event continues to grow in size and stature. In spite of a perceived downturn in some sectors of the industry the atmosphere was buoyant and there was no lack of interesting and stimulating papers.

Droitwich Junction locks restored

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and Droitwich Canals Trust (DCT) have announced the completion of the restoration of Hanbury Locks on the Droitwich Junction Canal. The re-opening ceremony took place on 31 May when the first boat to pass through the Locks was steered by Tom Mayo who is thought to have been on the last boat to travel on the Canal before it closed nearly 75 years ago.

Because the low-orbiting Iridium satellites are much closer to Earth than other systems (the geo-stationary Inmarsat systems orbits at 22,223 miles), it means the antenna for a satellite telephone is reduced dramatically in size, making it a viable communications system for all sizes of ships and boats.

New Towing Carrousel Causes a Stir

One of the most interesting technical innovations to be introduced to the towage industry at ITS 2002, and one that has progressed since the conference, was undoubtedly the Carrousel Towing System, a revolutionary patented towing connection. A towing connection mounted on a completely circular track, the so called Carrousel is a concept originating from a joint project initiated by Dr Markus van der Laan of IMC in the Netherlands, towing gear manufacturer Mampaey, and tugowner Multraship.

A meeting on the Isle of Wight between Halmatic's founder Patrick de Laszlo and the famous boat designer Uffa Fox led to the manufacture in 1952 of Europe's first fibreglass boat - a Flying Twenty moulded in a combination of Crystic 189 polyester resin with matted glass fibres which de Laszlo named Deborine after his wife Deborah.

The British Government's Department for Regional Development has given formal approval to Belfast Harbour Commissioners to conclude an agreement between famed shipbuilding and repair yard Harland and Wolff and Titanic Quarter Ltd. The agreement will hopefully secure the yard's future as some 80 acres of land identified as surplus to Harland and Wolff's operational needs will be freed for development.
