Rolls-Royce business Syncrolift Inc has won a $32 million order to provide a ship lifting system at a new Indian naval base. The shiplift, the first of its kind in India, is scheduled to go into service at the Karwar base, south of Goa, in late 2004.

With a capacity of almost 10,000 tones the lift is capable of handling all Indian Navy vessels up to and including the Delhi destroyer class.

The hoists, platform and associated ship transfer system will be made in India and project managed by Syncrolift Inc.

Geoff Stokoe, Syncrolift Inc President, said: 'This is an important contract from the Indian Navy.

The project will demonstrate all the benefits of using a Syncrolift shiplift to other naval and commercial operators in India, where we see tremendous potential.'
