Perkins Sabre Powers Pelican Pollution Boat
01 Jun 2002
Perkins Sabre engines have been chosen to provide the main propulsion and auxiliary power for the Pelican 2000 Series of specialised pollution and surface refuse clearance boats manufactured in France by Cannes-based Chaudronnerie Bagnis. The engines are being supplied by the Perkins distributor for the region, Rectification P L M of La Valette.
The 10.75m boats have a 2.5m beam and a draft of 3m.
The bow is in the form of a pair of hydraulically operated pincers that open to scoop effluent into a skip on the vessel's deck via a pulverising unit located in the hold. Water drawn in with the effluent is filtered through a series of grills before being oxygenated and then ejected through the stern.
The refuse skip is positioned amidships forward of the cabin for easy removal by crane and the 9 tonne steel vessel is designed for transportation between harbours on a special low-load trailer.
Main propulsion power is a Perkins Sabre M215C, while auxiliary power for the hydraulics and a firefighting and wash-down hose located at the stern is from a Perkins Sabre M85T.
The turbocharged and intercooled 6 cylinder, 6 litre M215C develops 225hp at 2,500rpm and gives the Pelican a top speed of up to 10 knots with the pincers closed. When these are opened for dredging, this is reduced to between 0.5 and 3 knots. The turbocharged M85T is a 4 cylinder, 3 litre engine producing 85hp at 2,600rpm.
