Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

'Svitzer' Successfully Completes EEZ Surveys

Great Yarmouth-based Svitzer has successfully completed the first stage of Mauritius continental shelf survey operations in the West Indian Ocean using its specialist hydrographic vessel L'Espoir.

The Svitzer Meridian was surveying the Mauritius Continental Shelf last month.

It is equipped with an upgraded Atlas Hydrosweep DS2 multibeam system which, according to Svitzer, has proved ideal for mapping seabeds of the Mascarene Plateau, the Southern Chagos Ridge and the Central Indian Plateau at depth ranges from 200 to 6000m.

Rapid onboard processing of data has also enabled very economic use of the vessel's time to obtain bathymetric survey data necessary to substantiate present Mauritian claims for an extended continental shelf.

The second phase of the project commenced in late April following arrival of the 72.5m seismic vessel, Svitzer Meridian.

It was scheduled to undertake a 2D seismic acquisition programme and provide the seismic source for refraction surveys while the L'Espoir deployed and retrieved ocean bottom seismometers. The two vessels were expected to complete their respective survey missions and demobilise to Port Louis before the end of May.
