Droitwich Junction locks restored

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and Droitwich Canals Trust (DCT) have announced the completion of the restoration of Hanbury Locks on the Droitwich Junction Canal. The re-opening ceremony took place on 31 May when the first boat to pass through the Locks was steered by Tom Mayo who is thought to have been on the last boat to travel on the Canal before it closed nearly 75 years ago.

Restoration of the top three locks is part of a continuing project to restore the Junction Canal. The restoration was made possible by an award of £100,000, part of a legacy of nearly £500,000 left to the Association, with the Trust providing the balance of the cost of the project. The legacy has been used to complete the full restoration of Locks 1 to 3 on the Droitwich Junction Canal and has included the cost of lock gates and lock gear to full operational standards on the three locks as well as the construction work undertaken by IWA's Waterway Recovery Group and DCT volunteers.
