Fixed Satellite Phones Reach Small Boat Market

Iridium is a system of 66 satellites cross-linked in space and orbiting just 485 miles above Earth. Because the low-orbiting Iridium satellites are much closer to Earth than other systems (the geo-stationary Inmarsat systems orbits at 22,223 miles), it means the antenna for a satellite telephone is reduced dramatically in size, making it a viable communications system for all sizes of ships and boats.

Following last year's successful relaunch of the Iridium system, a new, fixed satellite telephone has been introduced specifically for the marine market. Available from Salisbury UK-based SatCom Distribution Ltd, the IMF100 consists of a small external antenna, an electronics unit that can be hidden away below deck, and a compact handset with illuminated keypad for night use.

Just like the portable Iridium 9505 model, it will work in any sea condition anywhere in the world.

In addition to allowing voice communications, Iridium also enables users to send data at a standard rate of 2.4kbps, with a higher rate of 9.6kbps available via the Direct Internet Service.

Alternatively, a docking station is now available with an external antenna for the 9505 and, for those who wish to use the 9505 below deck, the external antenna may be purchased individually.
