Typhoon Hits Exmouth

The second Typhoon fishing boat to built by the UK's Cygnus Marine has been delivered to a charter business in Devon. Owned and operated by the Carter brothers of Exmouth, the 33ft Becci of Ladram will be used primarily for charter fishing off the south west coast of England and as far south as the Channel Islands.

Typhoons are a standardised range of fishing vessels featuring Scania engines. The Becci of Ladram has a draft of 50in, a beam of 13ft and a displacement of 10 tonnes. Power is derived from a single Scania DI12 44M 12 litre 400hp engine driving a 26in five bladed Teignbridge propeller.

The single Scania provides the same power as twin engines in the brothers' previous 33ft boat and uses considerably less fuel. The aft-located wheelhouse of the Typhoon design enables higher speeds than a boat with a forward wheelhouse.

The vessel was delivered from Cygnus Marine's yard in Penryn, Cornwall late last year. The GRP hull, superstructure and engine frames were supplied to the Carter brothers by road and local expert Simon Dixon was subsequently employed to fit out the boat.

On board equipment includes computer, echosounder, radar, GPS and a fully fitted galley, the power for which is supplied by the Scania engine.
