Visualisation Breakthrough for Marine Simulator Training
01 Jun 2002
Simulator-based training for mariners has been taken to a new level of authenticity with the introduction of a next generation visual presentation system from Transas. New visualisation software named Seagull_Vis 4000 represents the synthetic environment with an unprecedented level of realism and includes a number of advanced effects designed specifically for marine applications and developed to further improve the efficiency of simulator-based training.
In this visualisation version, extensive work has been performed to achieve the best possible quality of running time representation application using the latest developments in the OpenGL technology.
In particular, the new Transas visualisation system incorporates a high quality 3D sea model with dynamic bump mapping surface texturing.
The simulated sea surface realistically refects sky, clouds, sun, moon and stars, while the natural light sources, such as the sun and moon, are reflected with their lighting paths. The colour palette of the water surface as well as a wide range of other visual presentation parameters can be pre-set or dynamically changed from the instructor's workstation.
The environment lighting has been improved with advanced dusk and dawn effects. The dusk and dawn colour palette depends on the observer's geographical position, time of day, and date.
The simulated star globe is based on a true mathematical model of stars and planets' positioning and angle size. This depends on the observer's geographical position, time and date, and changes dynamically during the course of an exercise.
In Seagull_Vis 4000, the visibility of space objects is naturally influenced by pre-set general meteorological visibility conditions such as fog, rain and snow as well as the pre-set cloud density. Moreover, the sky representation has gained additional realism thanks to new fractal methods of cloud layer density modelling. Atmospheric precipitation now includes realistic 3D rain and snow models with pre-set or dynamically changed speed and density.
Transas offers a flexible upgrade policy for those Navi-Trainer simulator customers who wish to take advantage of the company's latest developments in visualisation modelling and presentation techniques.
