Thickness Gauging without Removing Coatings
01 Jun 2002
The Cygnus 4 Multiple Echo Thickness Gauge from Dorchester UK based Cygnus Instruments can be used to monitor corrosion levels quickly and easily, and from one side only, on ship shell plates, decks, pipelines and ballast tanks, or in any applicatiom on board where metal wastage is of concern to the operator.
Previous ultrasound technology meant that coatings had to be removed back to bare metal, whereas the multiple echo technique means that the metal thickness is measured through coatings up to 6mm thick. No grinding or chipping is required, saving both time and money.
In addition, even on uncoated metals, a measurement is only displayed as long as all three backwall echoes are equal. This means that all measurements are automatically verified prior to display. The multiple echo technique is recommended by class societies including IACS, lloyd, Bureau Veritas and ABS for taking thickness measurements through coatings.
The Cygnus 4 Guage is extremely easy to use and has a linear accuracy throughout its measuring range. A membrane protects the probe so that it does not get damaged on heavily corroded surfaces and there is no need to first zero the probe. It is housed in an IP65 rated case and the measurements are displayed on a backlit LCD display which can be viewed in all light conditions.
