Dutch Consulting Firm Wins Work in the United States

Consulting engineers Delta Marine Consultants (DMC) in the Netherlands has revealed details of a contract it has won from the US Army Corps of Engineers on an extension to a lock complex in Ohio.

DMC has been called in to provide its expertise in alternative construction techniques, including the use of large prefabricated elements, a technique that the Corps of engineers is trying for the first time on the project.

The construction project is on the Greenup Locks on the Ohio River, and is part of a much larger plan to increase the capacity of a number of lock complexes.

As a spokesperson for DMC explained, large volumes of coal are carried on the river.

Each lock complex comprises two chambers 360m in length and 33m wide, plus another shorter lock of 180m. The aim of the project is to extend the smaller lock chamber so that it can accommodate 15-barge 'push and tow' units.

DMC says its design for the new lock structure is due to be completed and submitted to the Corps of Engineers by the end of March, at which time it will begin preparation of detailed drawings and specifications.
