Interbeton Constructs Quay Wall in Port of Durban, SA

Interbeton, part of the Hollandsche Beton Groep (HBG) based in the Netherlands, - has been awarded a contract for the construction of a quay wall in Durban, South Africa.

The project, a joint venture with South African construction companies Grinaker-LTA and BCW, is being carried out on behalf of the National Ports Authority in South Africa and is valued at ?33m, of which HBG's share is more than ?13m.

The Port of Durban is one of the largest on the African continent.

Under the terms of their contract, the joint venture will build a quay wall with a length of 1,200m capable of servicing ships with a maximum draft of 15m.

Interbeton says the project also includes the construction of a prefabrication yard for the production of 52 caissons. These prefabricated elements (24m x 17m x18m) will be built on land and lowered in the water using a synchrolift. The caissons will then be towed to the construction site and submerged to form the foundation for the new structures.

The new quay wall will be built 200m in front of an existing berth, and the area between will be reclaimed, for which 3 million cubic metres of sand will be required. Interbeton says the project is now underway with the construction of the prefabrication yard and is due to be completed in mid-2003.
