Israeli Firm Completes New Quay

Oceana Marine, part of the Oceana Group in Israel, has completed a major marine construction and dredging project on behalf of the Eilat-Ashkelon Oil Pipeline Company Ltd, and is midway through the construction of a new quay at Haifa port on behalf of Israel Port Authority.
Completed in January of this year, the 12 month project required Oceana to re-build the existing breakwater at the Ashkelon basin in Eilat, close to the existing northern entrance to the quay located there, and open a new western entrance.
Having done so, Oceana was also responsible for the construction of a new, 100m long tugboat quay, and land reclamation and extensive dredging work.
As Ricardo Vazquez, a spokesperson for Oceana involved in the projects explained, the dredging work involved 130,000m 3of maintenance dredging in the approach channel to the quay and the adjoining turning basin, plus 30,000m 3of capital dredging work and 20,000m 3of land reclamation work for the construction of the new berth.
Acting as main contractor for the project, Oceana was also responsible for moving 50,000m 3of rock for the re-construction of the breakwater, and for driving 400t Arbed steel sheet piling and steel tie rods for the new quay, and for 2,200m 3of concrete and reinforced concrete work.
The company says it committed the trailing suction hopper dredger Onega River, the bucketwheel suction dredger Victoria, and a number of crawler cranes, hydraulic excavators, and pile driving hammers to the project.
Vazquez said the foundation for the new quaywall at Haifa had now been completed, along with some of the sheet piling involved, and that the project should be completed in the next few months.
Other recent marine civils work completed by Oceana Marine includes 75,000m 3ofdredging work for a pumping station on the Dead Sea - a project that saw Oceana reconstruct and modify an Ellicott Dragon wheel dredger to carry out the project - extensive sand and rock dredging for a desalination plant at Larnaca in Cyprus, and the reconstruction of Kishon fishing harbour in Haifa.
