Multibeam Helps With Post-dredge Survey

Clydeside Surveys in the UK has recently completed a post dredge survey in Belfast Lough, following a major widening of the existing 11km long channel.

The company says that due to the time required for a conventional single beam survey, which would have delayed the departure of the trailer suction dredgers that carried out the work, Clydeside Surveys utilised a multibeam sonar from Reson.

The survey was carried out using the Reson 8125 in one and a half days, with full QA, processing and export of the final data to CAD taking place in another half day.

According to the company, accuracy checks proved that the multibeam data was at least as accurate as conventional single beam. Clydeside Surveys also noted that another advantage of using the multibeam was that it was possible to obtain 100 per cent coverage, which, it claims, is almost impossible and 'wholly impractical' for single beam surveys.

The main disadvantage of multibeam is their cost, says the company. However, says Clydeside Surveys, when the coverage the multibeam provides, the quality of data and speed at which survey and processing can be carried out are considered, multibeam surveys have many advantages, and will become more popular in the future.
