Commercial Opportunities for Marine Renewables

This is to be 'the year of renewables' according to UK Energy Minister Brian Wilson MP, who predicted that the potential contribution of power generated from clean sources will finally be recognised.

Stressing that renewables can become the basis of a substantial manufacturing sector, he said 'It should not be forgotten that we had world leadership in wind power 20 years ago but did next to nothing with it. The Danes took a different view and now have a £4 billion per year manufacturing industry'.

His views mirror the aims of the All Energy Opportunities Conference and Exhibition, which he will be opening at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 28 and 29 May.

In addition to offshore windfarms, wave and tidal stream renewables have the potential to create significant new markets for the maritime industries. Last month Brian Wilson announced the award of a £1.1 million grant to The Engineering Business Ltd for further development of their Stingray tidal stream power generation system.

The new grant, following on from a three month feasibility study supported by the DTI, will support the design, manufacture, installation, operation and evaluation of the system.

Potential sites in the Shetland Islands have been identified and consent applications for the site will be submitted shortly.
