Electronic Skimmer Chases the Oil
01 Mar 2002
Rather than trying to pull the skimmer around with boats or ropes, Ro-Clean Desmi has introduced a simple propulsion system mounted on the arms of their Desmi Terminator model skimmer. The system is comprised of two hydraulically operated thrusters each capable of delivering up to 80kg of pushing power, sufficient to pull the skimmer with its associated hoses along in the water. Hydraulic levers, positioned by a diesel engine power pack on a boat's deck or quayside, control these thrusters.
To this system Ro-Clean Desmi has introduced electronic remote control for the skimmer and thrusters. The electronic remote control is available in two systems.
The first has the radio receiver mounted on the power pack on the deck, allowing an operator with hand-held radio transmitter to control power pack functions from any location, such as the bridge of a ship. This system is useful when locating concentrations of oil on water. The second system mounts the radio receiver on the skimmer itself. This reduces the number of hoses in the water as the hydraulic control valves are now placed on the skimmer also. Only mains feed lines are needed for the skimmer instead of a pair of hoses for every function.
