Raidco Lands French Navy Patrol Boat Order
01 Mar 2002
The French Navy has ordered the first 11 boats of a 22 boat coastal surveillance craft fleet on behalf of the Gendarmerie Maritime, which will use them for navigation patrol, anti-smuggling operations, fisheries policing and immigration control around the east coast of the country.
The order is with Lorient-based Raidco Marine, which has been responsible for negotiating the contract and will manage specification detail while providing the technical interface with the client. The boats will be built at the yard of Raidco's associate for this contract CNB at l'Herbaudiere. Raidco will be in charge of research and development, quality assurance, trials, delivery and after sales service. The 20m long craft will be built in GRP to a design by UK-based Camarc and will feature the proven double chine hull form common to many patrol and pilot boats.
The French Navy has set a demanding specification for the craft, with hull, deck and superstructure to be built of GRP while the control area is to be armoured to withstand small arms fire. The interior fit out will be done in modular form, with fully air conditioned accommodation and facilities for up to 8 crew. Low levels of noise and vibration must be achieved to maintain comfortable accommodation and working areas with sound levels not exceeding 75 dBA.
The boats are to be fitted with a launching web frame for a 4.70m RIB, with an integral recessed boarding area aft. The aft deck will be fitted with a powered winch quick recovery system for the RIB together with a towing facility.
The boats will have a flying bridge with full local control and a firefighting water cannon.
The propulsion package is to be V12 MAN or MTU engines, each developing 735kW and driving partially tunnelled fixed pitch propellers through ZF gearboxes to achieve speeds up to 25 knots. Each boat will have a single genset and be fitted with a comprehensive electronics suite.
The boats must meet the requirements of French Authorities and will be built to Lloyds Register Class 100A1 SSC Patrol G2, LMC.
Construction is due to commence in the first quarter of this year and the craft will be delivered at two month intervals after the first boat in January 2003.
