Water Taxis to Boost Lower Manhattan

Derecktor Shipyards of Mamaroneck, New York, has signed a contract with New York Water Taxi (NYWT) for the construction of six low wake passenger catamarans with which NYWT will create a feeder and distribution service for the ferry terminals in Lower Manhattan and operate small scale commuter, tourist and custom charter services.

This service will contribute to the revitalization of an area hit hard by the events of 11 September and enhance waterborne transportation for New York City residents and the 16 million tourists who visit each year. The Water Taxi service is scheduled to start operations in July of this year.

Designed by Nigel Gee & Associates, the new Water Taxis are 53.3' loa all-aluminium catamarans with low-wake hulls, a beam of 19' and a capacity for 54 seated passengers (75 maximum).

The boats are bow loaders and the passengers walk directly from the bow into the cabin located on the main deck.

ADA ramps allow easy access for wheelchairs, which are accommodated in dedicated spaces in the main cabin.

The fully heated and air conditioned cabin has a small aft bar and an ADA compliant toilet. Ample visibility is assured by large windows and a central row of outward facing back to back seats allows passengers to enjoy panoramic views of the cityscape. The open top deck will have removable seating arrangements for use in excursions and summer cruises.

Each ferry will be powered by two Detroit Diesel Series 60 keel-cooled engines, producing 600bhp at 2,100rpm and driving through Twin Disc gears to provide a top speed of 24 knots.
