Sanmar is one of the leading tugboat companies in Turkey and not only operates tugs and pilotage services but has it's own shipyard for the construction of tugs and workboats.

In the last 4 years, the company has constructed 15 modern tugs and has delivered six of them to four continents around the world.

In addition to a wide variety of tug and workboat construction, Sanmar concentrates on the construction of two standard tugboat series, the Dogancay and Sanmar.

This latest completion is a modified version of the original Dogancay series of vessels designed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, British Columbia and first built by Sanmar for their own use in 1998. The tug is classed for Unlimited service by ABS, +A1 Towage Vessel AMS and has been adapted to meet the exact needs of her owners. Dogancay IV is the fourth tug of Dogancay series and a further vessel Dogancay V is currently under construction.

Dogancay IV follows the original design developed by Robert Allan but with an increase of 60cm in beam, a fuller forward hull, and the addition of a skeg to improve directional stability while towing at sea. The vessel is 25.25m in length overall, with a beam of 8.60m and depth of 4.00m.

Considerable emphasis has been placed on very high manoeuvrability and an exceptional standard of stability commensurate with the most demanding of services.

Two Caterpillar 3512 TA main engines, each rated at 1445bhp at 1600rev/minute, drive twin propellers via Reintjes WAF 663 gearboxes with a 5.95:1 reduction. The propellers fitted are 2050mm diameter, three blade, highly skewed Kaplan type, designed by Nautican and manufactured by Lips. Four high aspect ratio flap rudders, also of Nautican design, are installed to give exceptional manoeuvrability.

On trials the Dogancay IV easily met all predictions, with a continuous bollard pull of 40.0 tonnes and a maximum free running speed of 13.2 knots.

The new vessel is fitted with Data Hydraulic towing winch (DTW 5X90E) with a 90 tonne maximum brake loading and a line pull of 7.5 tonnes at 20m per minute. The winch is fitted with 300m of 40mm diameter steel wire rope and provision is made to carry 200m of spare towline. Also include in the deck equipment are two Data Hydraulic tow pins, a 'hold down hook', and a Mampaey quick release tow hook.

Dogancay IV also features a dedicated fire-fighting system comprising a single stage axially split centrifugal pump manufactured by SMS of Turkey delivering 600m 3/h at 12 bar. The pump is driven via a clutch on the front of one main engine. A single Minimax water/foam monitor has a capacity of 100cu/litres/min.

The fire fighting system includes a water spray system for self-protection, and two storage tanks for foam compound with a capacity of 2m
