The Newhaven port authority has awarded a contract to Kent based N E Murray (Marine Contractors) to provide shiphandling services, following an increase in the size and frequency of ferries using the port. From the 19 March the twin-screw 'Dog class' tug Nore Commodore will be on station to offer a continuous round the clock service.

Portland Towage Ltd has re-commissioned the tug Sandsfoot Castle following a long period of refurbishment and repair. The 2200bhp single screw tug has a bollard pull of 30 tons and is equipped with a bow thruster. The company now operate a fleet of three tugs, which also includes the Maiden Castle (40 tons bollard pull) and Rufus Castle (16 tons), engaged in ship-handling, coastal towage and salvage work.

.Dutch towage contractor Rederij Waterweg of Den Helder has taken over Van Laar Scheepvaart a family owned marine contracting business located at Dordrecht. Waterweg operate a worldwide network of marine services for the dredging, cable laying and offshore industries. With this latest acquisition the size of the Waterweg fleet has increased to 45 vessels, including tugs, workboats and similar craft.

The French Government is tendering for two Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) with a bollard pull of at least 180 tonnes to operate from Brest and Cherbourg on a 24 hour, continuous service.

The vessels will be in place in January 2004 under a five year contract valued at 6.9 EUR.

Klyne Tugs (Lowestoft) Ltd have sold the 5,750bhp anchorhandling tug Anglian Earl to Suffolk Petroleum Services Ltd for use in Port Harcourt. Also leaving the UK based fleet is the 6,000bhp Lady Hammond, owned by Classic Marine and managed by Klyne Tugs. The later has been bareboat chartered to Al Bawardi of Abu Dhabi for two years with an option to purchase.
