Tug Refits Broaden WCT's Operational Scope
01 Mar 2002
The Capt I B Harvey of WCT Offshore Ltd is seen in her new role as short sea coastal tug towing a barge for Van Oord ACZ from Mostyn in North Wales to Dordrecht in Holland.
Since finishing her previous role as a West Coast Towing harbour tug, she has been fitted with a double drum towing winch, hydraulic deck crane and increased navigational aids and fresh water capacity.
Since her 'change of use' she has successfully carried out numerous tows around the UK and to the near continent for various charterers, including dredging and civil engineering companies.
She has proved an excellent fleet addition, complementing the 5,000bhp, 70 tonne bollard pull Valiant Nader and the 4,300 bhp, 60 tonne bollard pull tug Sir Michael, which carry out worldwide operations.
David Henshaw, WCT's Operations Director, felt the company was missing out on the smaller end of the towage market which this 25 tonne bollard pull tug, with excellent manoeuvrability provided by twin screws in independent Kort Nozzles, fits ideally. In fact, her identical sister ship I B Smith, is being fitted out in a similar manner to fulfill the same role.
At the time of writing, both tugs have been chartered through MCS International of Rotterdam for tuna fishing operations in the Mediterranean during the coming summer. Both tugs will tow in floating cages in support of the tuna fishing fleet.
