Heila Knows Where Dock's Hose Goes
01 May 2002
Simon Storage Ltd has taken delivery of its third Heila marine crane, supplied and installed at the company's terminal at Northumberland Dock, North Shields UK by MET Marine of Chesterfield. The 450º slew Heila HLRM.25-5S marine crane has a specially constructed base plate designed to suit fitment on an existing jetty surface.
The knuckle boom Heila crane with its five hydraulic extension operation and 1.1 tonne lifting capacity at 14.76m reach is ideal for handling the heavy industrial hoses used to discharge fluids, chemicals, oils and other tanker cargoes at the terminal, as well as carrying out general lifting duties.
In view of the often difficult materials to be handled and the hazardous areas in which it has to work, it was essential that the crane be totally spark-proof and compliant with Zone One EEXD international safety standards.
The crane has all hydraulic rather than electro-hydraulic limits for the winch and has both audible and analogue display overload warning systems fitted. Danfoss operating valves ensure the precise operation necessary for this type of application and all cylinders have protective nickel chrome treatment for working in harsh marine conditions.
MET Marine provided specialist on-site training for eight Simon Storage engineers who went on to qualify for idependent certification of competency. MET carried out the final overload testing procedures at the terminal and have arranged a six monthly maintenance programme to keep the crane in optimal working order.
