J P Knight Extend ISM Accreditation
01 May 2002
In the same year that they celebrate their 110 years in the towage business, Medway based J P Knight Ltd have announced further International Safety Management (ISM) accreditation within the group.
J P Knight (Caledonian) Ltd operating a small tug fleet at Invergordon has voluntarily achieved ISM status both ashore and afloat.
Since disposing of their Thames and Medway tug fleets over a decade ago, the activities of JP Knight are much less visible but the group remain very active, with tugs in Scotland, Surinam and Guyana. The tug fleet in Surinam, operating under the umbrella of JP Knight (Paranam) Ltd first achieved ISM accreditation in 1996, a challenging exercise with a fleet of tugs and barges transporting bauxite 120 miles downriver to seagoing ships in port.
The vessels involved are a mix of adapted twin-screw tugs, purpose built pushers and bulk cargo barges, operating in strong river currents and travelling 98,000 miles each year. Work has started towards achieving ISM status in a similar fleet carrying out very similar bauxite cargo operations in Guyana.
In both locations the vessels are operated by a mix of skilled local crews and personnel from the UK. In Guyana the tugs and barges carry their cargoes a similar distance through shallow waters and difficult currents but deliver to ships moored in the river estuary where Knight's tugs also assist with mooring.
