UKHO Contract Awarded to LSC Group

LSC Group of Tamworth has been awarded an innovative and high profile contract by the UK Hydrographic Office for digitisation of its archive of navigational data, including software development, scanning, meta-data capture and geo-referencing as part of a proposed state-of-the-art archive repositry at its Taunton base which will be open to the public for research purposes under its Freedom of Information obligations.

According to UKHO officials, LSC will be required to capture something in excess of 500,000 components, many of which are A0-size charts and associated information dating back to the 18th century. The contract follows LSC's earlier work in digitising the Royal Navy's suite of documentation comprising an estimated 2.3 million pages.

LSC says it has proposed a particularly innovative IT solution for the project, involving development of a complex solution for controlling, capturing and geo-referencing documents with workflow for use by both its own and UKHO staff.

Starting with the handling of data conversion requirements, the project will utilise the resources of existing LSC personnel at Tamworth for software development while staff at its associate base in Weymouth will be responsible for data capture and geo-referencing together with an on-site team for initial scanning processes.

Archive material consists of historically valuable material including hydrographic surveys, charts and books published by other countries, notices to mariners, aerial photography and numerous other types of documentation.
