SAM Extends Shaft Alternator Range
01 Nov 2002
STN Atlas Marine Electronics has extended its range of shaft alternators for supplying mains power driven via the ship's engine with the introduction of a new series of PWM (pulse width modulation) controlled systems providing improved rates of power generation at lower cost.
Suitable for installation aboard a wide range of ocean going vessels, the new series features a PWM converter based on the latest integrated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology, resulting in a reduced number of system components, no requirement for a synchronous compensator and lower capital costs. The IGBT converter ensures continuity of mains power without additional support: both single and continuous parallel operation with diesel generator sets under all load conditions is provided in common with all other Atlas shaft alternator systems.
The PWM series is characterised by reduced volume and weight while also requiring less cabling.
Supported by a fully digitised control system which can also be used for monitoring, test and simulation of all operating functions, the series is designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption costs and those affecting the maintenance of installed diesel gensets.
The new PWM series has a maximum power rating of 2,000kW/2,500kVa.
