Nearshore Component to Longest Pipeline Survey

Corrintec have commenced their longest ever subsea pipeline cathodic protection survey programme in the Gulf of Mexico. The survey, commissioned by PEMEX and operated by Oceanografia, will cover a total of 4,620km over a period of 54 months concentrating on pipelines within the South West sector of the Bay of Campeche.

World Dredging Congress XVII Tied to Next SMM Exhibition

The World Organisation of Dredging Associations (WODA) has announced that the 17th World Dredging Congress (WODCON) will take place in Hamburg from 27 September through to 1 October 2004, coinciding with the 21st staging of SMM. WODCON will be held at the CCH-Congress Centrum, which is linked by a covered path through a Japanese Garden to the SMM exhibition halls.

Suez Canal Contract

Atlas Hydrographic, based in Cairns, Australia and Bremen, Germany, has been awarded a contract worth more than €500,000 by the Suez Canal Authority in Ismailia for supply of multibeam echosounding facilities and associated equipment. According to the company, the equipment will be primarily used aboard a survey launch for pre and post-dredging hydrographic operations along sectors of the 193km-long Canal.

EA to Enlarge Lydney Docks Marina

The Environment Agency (EA) in the UK, which is planning a major regeneration effort at Lydney Docks near Gloucester, has increased the size of the marina it is planning to build to help pay for the project, and says it anticipates building a facility with 80-90 berths initially, in phase one of the project, adding another 50-60 berths at a later date.

The European Maritime Pilot's Association (EMPA) has warned that passage of the European Union's ports directive, which would force pilots to compete on a commercial basis, would compromise safety standards and discourage investment and training. EMPA represents 4,800 maritime pilots in Europe and facilitates the exchange of information between its members in order to continuously improve their professional and technical proficiency.

The Milford Haven Port Authority in the UK has demonstrated its commitment to conservation by using fender pilings made of recycled plastic in place of rain forest hardwood. During a £130,000 planned maintenance of their pilot jetty, the Authority and their consultants from the Babtie Group opted for fender pilings manufactured by Plastic Pilings of California USA.

Ro-Clean Desmi have delivered a 10m Pollkitten, the smallest in their range of Pollcat anti-pollution boats, to the CEPSA oil refinery at Spain's rapidly expanding port of Algeciras. Within five days of delivery the Balim was mobilised for an oil spill incident in Algeciras Bay, collecting 2,000 litres of spilled oil with only 10% water content, to the delight of owners CEPSA.

The arrival of the new tug/ workboat Jack James to J Butcher & Sons Ltd of Portsmouth passed quietly and without clamour on the 6 September. Within a day or two the new tug had joined the fleet and was busy shiphandling.
