On Board Power for Turkish Tugs
01 Oct 2002
Turkish tugboat builders and operators Sanmar markets its Dogancay and Sanmar series worldwide. Built at their Tuzla shipyard, the 25.25m Dogancay and more compact 18.29m Sanmar tugs are both classed by ABS without service restrictions.
The Dogancay series are powered by a pair of 1,500hp main engines, each having electronic management systems to optimise performance, ensure economical fuel consumption and guarantee low emissions levels. The engines drive through shafts to four bladed propellers that turn inside high lift nozzles.
Electrical power is provided by a pair of 74 kVA gensets provided by Beta Marine of Stroud UK.
Each set consists of a Perkins 4TGM engine and Stamford alternator. The sets are designed for single operation so that one set can carry the full working load independently. Special attention is paid to noise and vibration reduction in respect of exhaust silencing and the mounting of the set on high performance marine type anti-vibration mounts.
Sanmar are particularly interested in ensuring that their tugs comply with the strictest noise and emissions requirements and have taken care in their designs to ensure that these requirements are maintained.
The tugs are designed to operate with a three man crew for harbour operations although accommodation can be provided with living quarters for up to eight.
Sanmar operate some of their own tugs in three major areas around the Turkish coast. Most of the eight tugs in the current Sanmar fleet have Beta Marine generating sets of various sizes.
